Nokia Punches Back With June Release of N97

This month sees, Nokias attempts to fight back on some lost ground with the much anticipated UK launch of the N97. Friday 19th June is the first time UK mobile users will be able to get their mitts on this little honey which along with the Pre, are clear challengers to the iPhone.

Initially Sim Free at Nokia stores, Operator releases are likely to follow on from the 26th on the Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone networks. Operators previous objections to the integration of Skype but would now appear to be resolved. Presumably the opportunity to respond to O2 with its iPhone exclusivity proving to be too compelling.

Indications are very promising with Nokia packing in some top specs. Of note there’s HSDPA, WiFi, GPS, an a Carl Zeiss, 5MP camera. A sliding Qwerty keyboard, a stonking 32GB of memory and a microSD slot for a further 16GB. The tilting 3.5″ touch screen

Nokias Novistore comes preinstalled with the promise of 20,000 compatible “applications”. Just don’t confuse that with actual apps since the vast majority is multimedia content such as promotional material including photos, audio and video. However Twitters and Facebookers are accommodated and can look forward to extended opportunity’s to finish those Movie challenge quiz’s. The GPS functionality also provides the N97 to offer the similar location dependent applications already witnessed on the likes of the G1 and iPhone.

The Nokia N97 offers both the accelerometer and proximity sensor popularized on iPhone. Coming in on the tails of the T-Mobile G1 and iPhone 3GS, a digital compass is included for those who enjoy Orienteering.

With Samsung, Palm, Apple and now Nokia all releasing uber smartphones this month, hostilities are no doubt due to commence amongst the brigades of Fanboys.
